The Historic Sponge Docks were initially established by a few sponge divers who shopped around 1902 and started selling sponges. Over time more merchants flocked to this port city because it was one of only two ports that allowed imports from Greece (the other being New Orleans). Many of these merchants were Greek immigrants who brought their culture, leaving us with what we have today; a community full of Greek heritage and traditions!
